MM tips for your move

Preparing a move does not have to be stressful. Follow our experts' tips to get your belongings organised.

Choose a good removals company

Check that the company is properly registered and that it offers an insurance policy covering your belongings for the whole journey.

Declutter before you pack

Separate what you actually use from what you no longer need (clothes, books, appliances). You can donate or sell it to cut down the volume.

Pack ahead of time

Get your materials in good time: double-wall cardboard boxes, wide packing tape, bubble wrap and marker pens for labelling.

Sort and label your boxes

Label boxes with fragile items clearly. Keep valuables (jewellery, ID documents) with you at all times.

Make a full inventory

Write down everything you are moving and make a short list. It will help you check quickly that everything has reached your new home.

Placing everything in your new home

When you arrive, tell our crew clearly which room each piece of furniture and each box goes in. It will make unpacking far easier.

Defrost your appliances

Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer at least 48 hours before the move to avoid bad smells and water leaking in the lorry.

Careful packing for crockery

Use bubble wrap for ceramic and glass plates. Pack them on edge (upright) rather than flat, as they take the pressure far better.

Glasses and stemware

Use boxes with cardboard dividers. If you have none, wrap each glass individually in newspaper or plenty of bubble wrap.

Individual appliance parts

Take the blades out of blenders and the turntables out of microwaves. Coil up the power cables and tape them to the appliance.

Delicate electronics (TVs, games consoles)

Take off the stands and legs. Protect the TV screen with a thick blanket before putting it in its box. Keep the bracket screws in labelled bags.

Organise and secure the cables

Tape the power, HDMI and audio cables to the back of the unit with masking tape or a gentle adhesive tape so nothing gets yanked out.

Mirrors and pictures

Wrap them in bubble wrap, covering the corners completely. In the removal lorry they always travel upright, resting against the walls.

Books and shelving

Use small boxes for books. Books are heavy, and with big boxes you risk the bottom giving way as you lift them.
